Louis L. Kaplan was a known educator in the Baltimore, Maryland area, especially with his involvement in Jewish education, and the University System of Maryland. Kaplan was the president of Baltimore Hebrew University for forty years, a member of the University of Maryland Board of Regents, and the acting chancellor of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County from 1976 to 1977. ==Early life== Louis Lionel Kaplan (1902-2001) was born in Slonim, Russia in 1902, and was taken to the United States as a child in 1909. His family settled in Brooklyn, New York, where his father began a sweater factory. Kaplan graduated from Boys High School, and went on to earning a bachelor's degree from Columbia University in 1922, and a doctorate in humane letters from Dropsie College in Philadelphia in 1927. In addition, he studied at Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1924 to 1925 and at the American School of Oriental Research with archaeologist William Foxwell Albright.
